Our Partnership with WWF Our Ongoing Commitment - Year Two

Traceability and Legality
John West’s group in Europe continuously carries out a risk assessment to identify any Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing. Following this assessment, we activate plans to tackle any issues that come to light to reduce the risk of any IUU.

Promoting Improvement
John West’s group in Europe are actively engaged in management policy improvements regarding tuna, set out by the RFMO (Regional Fisheries Management Organization). Specifically, this means supporting the adoption of Harvest Control Rules, in particular in the Indian Ocean.

Transparency and Engagement
The purse seiners used to catch John West tuna are listed on the ISSF ProActive Vessel Register (PVR). The PVR provides validated information regarding a vessel’s implementation of specific best practices designed to improve responsible practices in tuna fishing.
Vessels on the PVR agree to undergo regular auditing. Level 1 audits are conducted by ISSF and assess the vessel attributes and other details that are required as part of the application. Level 2 and 3 audits are conducted by MRAG Americas on a sample of PVR vessels as a means of verifying that vessels have and continue to meet the ISSF Commitments. Level 2 and 3 audits are conducted independent of ISSF.
Interested parties can view a vessel’s compliance or non-compliance with each of these best practices by viewing the public PVR database.
We employ a third party to audit the tuna vessels within our supply chain to ensure they comply with the regulations on IUU, the ISSF requirements, Thai Union Europe’s fish sustainability policy as well as Thai Union’s Business Ethics and Labour Code of Conduct.
